Alcohol can increase urine production and may make nighttime bathroom trips more likely.
It can also interfere with normal sleep, meaning you may wake more easily during the night.
If you frequently wake up to urinate, reducing or avoiding alcohol in the evening may be worth trying.
Don’t Ignore Swollen Ankles
There is another reason some people produce more urine at night that has nothing to do with drinking too much water before bed.
During the day, fluid can accumulate in the lower legs, particularly when someone spends many hours standing or sitting.
When you lie down at night, some of that fluid can return to the circulation and eventually be processed by the kidneys, increasing urine production.
If you regularly have swollen ankles or legs, mention this to your healthcare professional.
Some people may benefit from spending time during the day with their legs elevated, depending on the cause of the swelling.
Take a Look at Your Medications
Certain medications can increase urine production.
Diuretics, sometimes called water pills, are commonly prescribed for conditions such as high blood pressure and fluid retention. Taking them later in the day can contribute to nighttime urination in some people.
However, never change the timing or dose of a prescription medication on your own.
If you suspect a medication is responsible for your nighttime bathroom trips, ask your doctor or pharmacist whether the timing can safely be adjusted.
