1. Make the dough
In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt.
Add the warm milk, egg, melted butter, and vanilla. Mix until a soft dough forms.
2. Knead
Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes, until smooth and elastic. If it feels too sticky, add a little flour, one tablespoon at a time.
3. Let it rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
4. Shape the pieces
Gently press down the dough and divide it into 8 equal portions. Roll each piece into a ball, then flatten it slightly and shape it into a triangle or wedge.
5. Second rise
Arrange the pieces on a lightly floured tray. Cover and let them rest for 20–30 minutes.
6. Fry
Heat about 1–2 inches of vegetable oil in a deep skillet to approximately 350°F (175°C).
Carefully place the dough pieces into the hot oil. Fry in batches for about 2–3 minutes per side, turning until beautifully golden brown.
7. Drain
Transfer the fried pastries to a paper towel-lined plate to remove excess oil.
8. Finish
Once slightly cooled, dust generously with powdered sugar.
