Crispy Southern Fried Okra

  • by

Step 1: Prepare the Okra

Wash the okra thoroughly and pat it dry.

Trim the stems without cutting into the seed pods. You can leave the pods whole or slice them into ½-inch rounds if you prefer bite-sized pieces.

Step 2: Soak in Buttermilk

Place the okra in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it.

Let it soak for 10–15 minutes. This helps the coating stick and gives the okra a tender texture.

Step 3: Make the Coating

In a shallow dish, combine:

  • Cornmeal
  • Flour
  • Salt
  • Garlic powder
  • Onion powder
  • Black pepper
  • Paprika
  • Cayenne pepper (if using)

Mix well.

Step 4: Coat the Okra

Remove the okra from the buttermilk, allowing the excess to drip off.

Roll each piece in the seasoned cornmeal mixture until evenly coated.

Place the coated okra on a tray while you heat the oil.

Step 5: Fry

Heat about 2 inches of oil in a deep skillet or Dutch oven to 350°F (175°C).

Fry the okra in small batches for 3–5 minutes, turning occasionally, until golden brown and crispy.

Avoid overcrowding the pan, as this lowers the oil temperature.

Step 6: Drain

Transfer the fried okra to a plate lined with paper towels or a wire rack to drain excess oil.

Sprinkle lightly with a little extra salt while still hot.

Step 7: Serve

Serve immediately while hot and crispy.
