1. Prepare the tomato
Wash and dry the tomato. Slice it into thick, even slices. If the tomato is particularly juicy, gently pat the slices with paper towels to remove some excess moisture.
2. Prepare the bread
Place two slices of bread on a clean surface. For a richer sandwich, lightly butter the bread before adding the mayonnaise.
3. Add the mayonnaise
Spread a generous layer of mayonnaise evenly over one side of each slice of bread.
4. Season the bread
Sprinkle a little black pepper and, if desired, a small amount of garlic powder over the mayonnaise.
5. Add the tomatoes
Arrange the tomato slices generously over one slice of bread, slightly overlapping them.
6. Season the tomatoes
Sprinkle the tomatoes with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Add a little fresh basil if desired.
7. Assemble the sandwich
Place the second slice of bread on top, mayonnaise-side down. Press gently so the sandwich holds together without squeezing out the tomatoes.
8. Slice and serve
Cut the sandwich in half and serve immediately while the tomatoes are fresh and juicy.
Tip
For the best tomato sandwich, use ripe, flavorful tomatoes and season them just before eating. A pinch of flaky salt and freshly cracked black pepper makes a surprisingly big difference.
