A silent visitor with a clear habit
In a quiet nursing home in the Scottish border region, a sign had hung at the entrance from day one: « No animals allowed. » But despite this rule, a stray dog appeared punctually every evening and found its way into the building. The staff called him « Ghost »—a large mixed-breed with a torn ear, a slightly crooked tail, and the marks of a hard life on his body.
He had no collar, no microchip, and no known owner. One day he was simply there, without warning, and he never really left. It quickly became clear to the staff that he wasn’t just passing through. He came intentionally. And his destination was always the same.
Margaret and the quiet connection
In 2017, fourteen residents lived in the facility. Among them was Margaret, 91 years old and suffering from advanced dementia. She no longer recognized her daughter, barely remembered the city where she had lived for decades, and often struggled to find the right words. The doctors were certain she didn’t have much time left. But the expected few months turned into six years.
And through all these years, Ghost was there. Night after night. Without exception.
On the east side of the building, there was a basement window with a broken shutter. It had been reported, a repair had been planned – but then everything was forgotten. The night shift team finally understood what was going on and made an unspoken decision: they let him be.
