Your Colon Could Be Silently Affecting Your Health — Here’s What You Can Do Naturally

  • by

Repeatedly ignoring the urge to use the bathroom can contribute to constipation for some people.

Try giving yourself enough time to use the bathroom without rushing. Establishing a consistent routine, such as sitting on the toilet after breakfast, may help some people develop more regular bowel habits.

A comfortable posture can also make bowel movements easier.

Be Careful With “Colon Detox” Products

Juices, teas, powders, supplements, and colon-cleansing programs are often promoted as ways to remove accumulated toxins.

But the human body already has organs responsible for processing and eliminating waste, including the liver and kidneys. A healthy colon also naturally moves stool out of the body.

Some aggressive cleansing products can cause diarrhea, dehydration, electrolyte disturbances, abdominal cramping, or medication interactions.

If you are considering a supplement marketed for “detoxification,” speak with a healthcare professional or pharmacist first, particularly if you take prescription medication.

Your Gut Microbiome Matters Too

The colon contains trillions of microorganisms that make up the gut microbiome.

A varied diet rich in plant foods provides different types of dietary fiber that can support a diverse intestinal microbiome.

Instead of searching for one magical food that “cleans the colon,” focus on variety. Vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, nuts, and seeds can all contribute different nutrients and types of fiber.

What About Green Smoothies?

A green smoothie can be a convenient way to include vegetables and fruit in your diet. Ingredients such as spinach, kale, berries, cucumber, and other whole foods can provide fiber and nutrients.

However, a smoothie is not a medical treatment for colon disease and does not “flush toxins” from the body.

If you enjoy smoothies, use them as part of an overall balanced diet rather than relying on them as a detox remedy.

Warning Signs You Should Never Ignore

Some bowel symptoms deserve medical attention.

Contact a healthcare professional if you experience persistent changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, unexplained weight loss, ongoing abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea or constipation, unusual fatigue, or a feeling that your bowel does not empty properly.

Black or tarry stools can sometimes indicate bleeding higher in the digestive tract, while visible red blood may come from several different causes, including hemorrhoids and other conditions.

Do not assume that rectal bleeding is simply hemorrhoids without appropriate evaluation.
