Social media is full of posts claiming that a pinch of white powder can instantly whiten yellow teeth. While some home remedies may remove surface stains, there is no safe DIY ingredient that can dramatically whiten teeth overnight.
In fact, some popular remedies—such as baking soda mixed with lemon juice, charcoal, or hydrogen peroxide used incorrectly—can damage tooth enamel or irritate your gums if used too often.
Here’s what actually works.
A Gentle Baking Soda Whitening Paste
Baking soda is a mild abrasive that may help remove surface stains from coffee, tea, or tobacco. It does not bleach teethor change their natural color.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- A few drops of water
Optional: A small drop of fluoride toothpaste.
Step 1: Make the Paste
Mix the baking soda with just enough water to form a smooth paste.
Step 2: Brush Gently
Using a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush your teeth gently for about 2 minutes.
Avoid scrubbing aggressively.
Step 3: Rinse Well
Rinse your mouth thoroughly with water.
Follow with your regular fluoride toothpaste if you haven’t already.
How Often Should You Use It?
Limit baking soda to 1–2 times per week.
Using it too frequently may gradually wear away enamel.
