Why Does the Vagina Sometimes Have a Sour Smell? 4 Common Causes Every Woman Should Know

  • by

A healthy vagina naturally has a mild scent that can change throughout the menstrual cycle. A slightly sour or tangy odoris often normal and is usually caused by the healthy bacteria that help maintain the vagina’s natural acidic environment. However, a strong or unusual odor accompanied by other symptoms may indicate an infection or another condition that requires medical attention.

Important: Every woman’s natural scent is different. The goal is not to eliminate all odor, but to recognize changes that may signal a health problem.

1. A Healthy Vaginal pH

One of the most common reasons for a mild sour smell is a healthy vaginal pH.

Beneficial bacteria called Lactobacillus produce lactic acid, which keeps the vagina slightly acidic (normally between pH 3.8 and 4.5). This acidic environment helps prevent harmful bacteria from growing.

A mild sour scent without itching, pain, or unusual discharge is usually normal.

2. Bacterial Vaginosis (BV)

Bacterial vaginosis occurs when the normal balance of vaginal bacteria changes.

Common symptoms include:

  • A strong fishy odor (often more noticeable after sex)
  • Thin gray or white discharge
  • Mild irritation or burning

BV is common and treatable with prescription medication from a healthcare provider.

3. Yeast Infection
