PART 3
Daniel couldn’t take his eyes off the young man standing in front of him.
“You’re my son?”
The young man nodded.
“My name is Michael.”
Daniel slowly sat down.
“I don’t understand.”
I looked at Michael.
“Neither did I, at first.”
Then I finally told Daniel the truth.
After he left, I discovered that I was not only pregnant with our fourteenth child. During the delivery, the doctors discovered that I had been carrying two babies.
The fourteenth child was a boy.
And there was another baby.
A boy I had never known about.
The hospital records had been mixed up during an emergency transfer years earlier. Another woman had given birth the same night, and one of the newborns had been mistakenly registered under the wrong name.
Michael had spent his childhood believing another man was his father.
But when that man died, Michael discovered the truth.
He found me.
And eventually, we discovered that Daniel was his biological father.
Daniel covered his mouth.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because when Michael found me, he didn’t want anything to do with you.”
Daniel looked at Michael.
“Why?”
Michael finally spoke.
“Because I knew what you had done to Mom.”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I was ashamed.”
Michael continued.
“You left fourteen children behind. You didn’t just leave her.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know.”
I walked toward the kitchen and returned with a stack of photographs.
I placed them on the table.
They showed birthdays.
Graduations.
Christmas mornings.
School ceremonies.
Family vacations.
Fourteen children growing up.
Daniel picked up each photograph with trembling hands.
“I missed all of this.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you ever call me?”
I looked directly at him.
“Because you made your choice.”
He nodded.
Then I said the one thing I had been waiting years to tell him.
“Daniel, I didn’t struggle alone.”
He looked confused.
“After you left, the community helped us. I started a small catering business from our kitchen. The children helped me. Eventually, it became a successful company.”
I pointed toward the framed photographs on the wall.
“That house you see? I bought it.”
Daniel looked around.
“You did all this?”
“We did.”
Michael stepped beside his mother.
“And she did it without you.”
Daniel wiped his tears.
“I came back because I realized I had lost the best thing that ever happened to me.”
I shook my head.
“No. You came back because you finally realized what you had thrown away.”
He fell silent.
Then he slowly got down on his knees again.
“Please.”
The entire house became quiet.
“I don’t expect you to forget what I did. I don’t expect you to love me again. But please let me be their father.”
I looked at my children.
Some were crying.
Some were angry.
Some simply stared at the man they barely remembered.
Finally, I looked back at Daniel.
“You can be their father.”
His eyes filled with hope.
“But you cannot be my husband.”
His face fell.
“You left me once,” I continued. “I spent years learning how to build a life without you. I won’t destroy that life just because you finally regret your decision.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I understand.”
Then Michael walked over and put his hand on Daniel’s shoulder.
“Maybe you can start by getting to know your children.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Would you let me?”
Michael smiled faintly.
“One day at a time.”
Daniel began crying.
And for the first time in many years, the house wasn’t filled with questions about why their father had left.
It was filled with something different.
A second chance.
Not for our marriage.
But perhaps…
For our family.
THE END.
