Two Cloves Before Bed: What They Can Really Do for Your Health

  • by

Cloves are a fragrant spice commonly used in cooking, baking, teas, and traditional remedies. Because they contain aromatic compounds and antioxidants, cloves have attracted interest for their potential health effects.

A popular claim says that eating two cloves before bed can reduce inflammation, eliminate joint stiffness, improve digestion, and make you wake up feeling “lighter.” While cloves can certainly be part of a healthy diet, these claims are much stronger than the available evidence supports.

What Makes Cloves Interesting?

Cloves are the dried flower buds of the clove tree. They contain a concentrated amount of plant compounds, particularly eugenol, which contributes to their distinctive aroma and flavor.

They also contain antioxidant compounds and small amounts of several nutrients.

Because cloves are highly concentrated in flavor, you only need a small amount when cooking.

Can Two Cloves Reduce Inflammation?

Cloves and eugenol have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in laboratory research.

However, laboratory findings don’t automatically mean that eating two cloves produces a clinically meaningful reduction in inflammation in humans.

So while cloves can be a useful spice, it would be inaccurate to say that two cloves before bed treat chronic inflammation.

What About Joint Stiffness?

Joint stiffness can have many causes, including normal aging, osteoarthritis, injuries, inactivity, and inflammatory conditions.

There isn’t strong clinical evidence showing that eating two cloves at night can reverse arthritis or eliminate joint stiffness by morning.

If you regularly experience painful or stiff joints, particularly if the joints are swollen, warm, or becoming progressively harder to move, the underlying cause deserves attention.

A balanced diet and regular physical activity can support joint health, but a single spice isn’t a substitute for appropriate treatment.

Can Cloves Help With Digestion?

Cloves have a long history of use in traditional food preparations for digestive comfort.

Their strong aroma and flavor can make them pleasant in teas or meals, but there is limited evidence that a specific dose—such as exactly two cloves before bed—will reliably eliminate bloating or abdominal heaviness.

Some people may actually experience stomach irritation or heartburn from concentrated spices.

If you frequently experience bloating, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, or reflux, it’s better to investigate the cause rather than repeatedly treating the symptoms with cloves.
