Have you ever noticed small white or yellow lumps in the back of your throat that have an unpleasant smell? These are often tonsil stones, also known as tonsilloliths. Although they can be alarming, they are usually harmless and are a common cause of persistent bad breath.
Important: White bumps in the mouth are not always tonsil stones. They can also be caused by infections, cysts, or other conditions. If you’re unsure or have severe symptoms, consult a healthcare professional.
What Are Tonsil Stones?
Tonsil stones are small, hard deposits that form in tiny pockets (called tonsil crypts) in the tonsils.
They are made from a mixture of:
- Food particles
- Dead cells
- Mucus
- Bacteria
- Minerals such as calcium
Over time, these materials harden into small white or yellow stones.
Why Do Tonsil Stones Form?
Several factors can increase the likelihood of developing tonsil stones:
- Deep or large tonsil crypts
- Chronic tonsillitis
- Poor oral hygiene
- Postnasal drip
- Dry mouth
- Accumulation of bacteria and debris
Not everyone with these risk factors will develop tonsil stones.

Many people have no symptoms at all.
Others may notice:
- Persistent bad breath (halitosis)
- A sore or irritated throat
- Difficulty swallowing
- Feeling like something is stuck in the throat
