Because it is so simple to use, many people assume there is almost nothing that can go wrong. However, a few common habits can shorten the life of the appliance, waste electricity, or create unnecessary safety risks.

One of the most common mistakes is filling the kettle beyond the maximum water line. It may seem harmless to add extra water so you can prepare several cups at once, but an overfilled kettle can allow boiling water to splash or escape through the spout. Hot water and steam can cause serious burns, particularly when children are nearby. Always check the marked maximum level before switching the kettle on.

Another mistake is operating the kettle with too little or no water. Most modern kettles include boil-dry protection, which automatically switches the appliance off when it becomes too hot. Nevertheless, repeatedly allowing a kettle to boil dry can put unnecessary stress on its heating element and other components. Before turning it on, make sure there is enough water inside.

Leaving an electric kettle unattended is also a poor habit. Although many models switch off automatically after reaching boiling point, automatic shutoff should be treated as an additional safety feature rather than a reason to ignore the appliance. If you notice smoke, unusual smells, sparks, damaged wiring, or strange sounds, unplug the kettle and stop using it until the problem has been properly assessed.

The electrical connection deserves attention as well. A kettle draws a significant amount of power while heating water, so its plug, cable, and outlet should be in good condition. Avoid using a damaged extension cord, loose outlet, or frayed power cable. Keeping electrical appliances away from sinks, wet countertops, and standing water is an important part of basic electrical safety.

Another overlooked issue is mineral buildup. In areas with hard water, limescale can accumulate inside the kettle and around the heating element. A thick layer of scale can affect heating performance and may make the appliance take longer to boil water. Regular cleaning according to the manufacturer’s instructions can help maintain efficiency and extend the appliance’s useful life.

Repeatedly boiling far more water than you actually need can also increase energy consumption. If you are making one cup of tea, measuring approximately one cup of water instead of filling the entire kettle can save both time and electricity. Small changes in energy efficiency can make a noticeable difference when the appliance is used several times every day.

It is also important to avoid placing objects on top of the kettle or covering its ventilation areas. Steam needs somewhere to escape, and blocking openings can interfere with normal operation. The kettle should sit on a stable, dry, heat-resistant surface away from curtains, paper towels, wooden objects, and other materials that could be affected by heat or steam.

Cleaning should never be performed while the kettle is connected to power. Unplug it, allow it to cool completely, and follow the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions. Never immerse the electrical base or power connection in water. This simple precaution can reduce the risk of electric shock and help protect the appliance.

People sometimes continue using a kettle even after it has developed visible damage because it still appears to work. This can be a mistake. Cracked plastic, melted components, damaged insulation, exposed wires, a loose plug, or repeated electrical tripping are warning signs that should not be ignored. Replacing a faulty appliance is generally safer than attempting to continue using it.

Homeowners and renters should remember that electrical appliance safety is also part of broader fire prevention and property protection. A small kitchen appliance may seem insignificant, but electrical faults can contribute to household fires and expensive property damage. Maintaining appliances, using suitable electrical outlets, and following the manufacturer’s instructions are simple steps that can protect both your household and your home.

The safest routine is straightforward: use the correct amount of water, keep the kettle on a stable dry surface, never operate it when damaged, keep electrical connections away from water, clean mineral deposits regularly, and unplug the appliance when appropriate. Most importantly, do not rely solely on automatic shutoff as a substitute for safe habits.

An electric kettle should make daily life easier, not create unnecessary risks. Taking a few seconds to check the water level, power cord, outlet, and condition of the appliance can improve kitchen safety, reduce energy waste, and help the kettle last longer. These simple precautions cost almost nothing but can prevent burns, electrical problems, appliance damage, and potentially much more expensive household repairs.
