Mercedes wrote to the former owner 3 times asking him to wait before accepting other offers.
He refused.
Hector and Nadia offered better conditions and closed the purchase.
The hostility thus had two layers: prejudice and personal resentment because Mercedes believed that the house should have ended up in the hands of her family.
The extraordinary meeting was held the following Thursday at the social center.
43 owners attended.
Mercedes arrived with a lawyer and claimed that it had all been an impulsive reaction.
—I thought he was protecting Monteverde.
Clara asked to speak.
—What exactly?
Mercedes did not respond.
Clara placed the folder on the table.
—Because this didn’t start with Hector and Nadia.
He read several emails.
Then Thomas got up.
—I also want to rectify.
He acknowledged that Mercedes had been using favors and administrative threats for years to gain support. If someone backed her, certain reforms were tolerated. If someone disagreed, complaints and letters appeared.
« On Saturday he told me about my terrace so that I would back up his story, » he admitted. « And I was a coward. »
Mercedes shook her head.
—You’re trying to save yourself.
« Yes, » replied Thomas. « But at least now I’m telling the truth. »
Nadia asked to speak.
He didn’t raise his voice.
—On Saturday, it hurt that Mercedes treated us like suspects. But it hurt even more to knock on a door with a plant to introduce myself and have it closed on me because everyone was afraid of upsetting her.
Pilar started to cry.
-I’m sorry.
Nadia looked at her.
—I don’t need you to feel sorry for me. I need you not to close the door next time.
The vote to remove Mercedes was almost unanimous.
It was also approved to hire an external administrator, review the bylaws, and eliminate any informal “validation” forms without legal backing.
The following weeks were uncomfortable.
Mercedes stopped attending meetings. Her lawyer sent several communications. The matter of the false call continued, and she ended up admitting that she had described as assault an encounter that never happened.
There was no revenge scene.
Hector did not publicly humiliate her nor did he ask anyone to persecute her.
Something else mattered to him: that the rules should no longer depend on who was knocking at the door.
Three months later, Monteverde had a new board.
The minutes were published. The financial decisions could be reviewed. The new owners received exactly the same information. There was no « admission process. »
House number 27 also changed.
Nadia planted lavender by the mailbox and jasmine on the porch. Roco learned to sit by the fence when the mailman passed by. Hector fixed up the garage and put a large table in the patio.
It took Pilar almost 2 months to cross the street.
One Sunday he brought an apple pie.
—I don’t expect you to forget what happened.
Nadia accepted the dish.
—We will not forget it.
Pilar nodded.
—I don’t want to forget it either.
Tomás appeared weeks later while Hector was fixing a hinge.
—I owe you an apology.
—Yes —Hector replied.
Tomás seemed surprised.
—I knew you hadn’t touched her.
Hector put down the screwdriver.
—So now you know what to do if you ever find yourself in a similar situation again.
-Talk.
—Before it’s comfortable to do so.
Thomas nodded.
They didn’t become friends overnight, but from that day on he started saying hello.
Six months later, another family bought a house at the end of the street. They arrived on a Saturday in a white van with far too many boxes.
Before he had even finished opening the gate, 5 neighbors had come out to help.
Nadia watched the scene from the porch. Hector appeared behind her with two coffees.
A man was trying to carry a sofa by himself. Tomás ran to help him. Pilar was carrying glasses of water. Clara was talking to the children.
Roco wagged his tail behind the fence.
« Maybe something did change, » Nadia said.
Hector gazed at the street.
—It changed because some people decided not to remain silent anymore.
That afternoon, as the sun set over the rooftops, Nadia asked him if he regretted buying that house.
Hector looked at the lemon tree, the lavender, and the patio table.
—Not a single day.
The house had never needed to prove its ownership. The deed stated it from the beginning.
Nor did Hector need to prove that he deserved respect by displaying a public office.
That was what bothered many neighbors the most when they remembered that morning.
Not that they had mistaken a stranger for someone important.
But they only began to consider him important when they discovered who he was.
Because the real shame of Monteverde didn’t come when Sergeant Ortega said « Mr. Mayor ».
He arrived just before.
When everyone thought Hector was just an ordinary man.
And some thought that, for that reason, they could treat him as if he were worth less.
