“Stop pretending,” my mom snapped while I was gasping for air at the kitchen sink. My uncle said I was only trying to avoid washing dishes.

The police were called after the hospital staff documented the situation.

Uncle Ray was still at the house when officers arrived.

They found several empty beer bottles near the kitchen.

One officer asked him what happened.

Ray said,

“She was pretending.”

The officer looked at him.

“Did you see her struggling to breathe?”

“Yes.”

“Did you help?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Ray shrugged.

“She does it for attention.”

The officer wrote something down.

Then asked,

“Did you hear her ask for help?”

Ray hesitated.

“Yes.”

The officer looked at him.

“And what did you do?”

Ray didn’t answer.

The officer closed his notebook.

“That answer is enough.”

Part 10 — The Phone Recording

There was one more piece of evidence.

Caleb had recorded part of the argument on his phone.

Not intentionally.

He had started recording because he was scared.

The audio captured my voice.

“Mom, I can’t breathe.”

Then her response.

“Stop pretending.”

Then Uncle Ray:

“She just doesn’t want to wash dishes.”

The room became silent when the recording played.

My mother listened without speaking.

Daniel covered his face.

Caleb looked down.

The social worker asked me,

“Do you want us to keep this?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

The recording became part of the hospital’s documentation.

Not because I wanted revenge.

Because I never wanted another person to tell me that I had imagined what happened.
