Someone Left a Giant Block of Ice on My Lawn Overnight – When It Melted, It Revealed Something That Brought the Authorities to My Door

  • by

“What?”

“If she comes looking, she needs to know it’s connected to him.”

That was the first moment I stopped feeling threatened.

And started feeling guided.

I went home and emptied Daniel’s old hospital bag onto the dining room table.

Socks.

Lip balm.

A paperback.

And at the bottom, a small notebook.

Most of the pages contained ordinary things.

Groceries.

Bills.

Reminders.

But one name appeared several times in the margins.

Owen.

I called Ruth, the hospice nurse who had visited Daniel near the end.

She remembered me immediately.

“Did Daniel ever talk about someone named Owen?”

A long pause.

“Yes. An old friend. He visited once while you were showering.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Did Daniel give him anything?”

Another pause.

“His watch.”

I stopped breathing.

“I remember because Daniel specifically told me not to include it with his personal belongings. He said, ‘That one is already spoken for.’ I assumed you knew.”

I closed my eyes.

One piece finally made sense.

Unfortunately, it made everything else more confusing.

I searched Daniel’s notebook again.

Inside the back cover, beneath the cardboard lining, I found an address.

No message.

No explanation.

Just an address in the industrial part of town.

The repair shop looked nearly abandoned, but lights were on inside.

A bell rang when I opened the door.

A man standing over a dismantled lawn mower looked up.

The moment he saw me, I knew he recognized me.

“So,” I said, “do I call the police before or after you explain why my dead husband’s watch was delivered to my porch frozen inside a block of ice?”

Owen slowly put down his screwdriver.

He looked older than Daniel had ever gotten the chance to become.

“I hoped you’d find me before they did.”

“That isn’t an explanation.”

“No.”

He sighed.

“But it’s true.”

“Start talking.”

Owen told me Daniel had given him the watch during the final week of his life.

Then he told me something Daniel never had.

Daniel had a son.

A grown son from a relationship before me.

His name was Evan.

They had been estranged for years.

Daniel had wanted to tell me more than once.

But shame stopped him.

So did fear.

And Evan had made it clear he wanted nothing to do with his father.

“Then why send me the watch now?”

“Daniel made me promise I wouldn’t tell you unless Evan ever came back.”

I stared at him.

“You waited three years?”

“There was nothing to tell you.”

“And now?”

“Evan contacted me two months ago.”

My chest tightened.

“He asked whether it was too late to meet you.”

I stared at Owen.

“You could have written me a letter.”

“Yes.”

“You could have knocked on my door.”

“Yes.”

“Instead, you froze my dead husband’s watch and left it outside like some kind of threat.”

Owen looked ashamed.

“I know.”

“Why?”
