1. Make the beef patties
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, egg, onion, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper. Mix gently until everything is just combined.
Shape the mixture into 4–6 oval patties, depending on the size you prefer.
2. Prepare the slow cooker
Lightly grease the inside of your slow cooker. Spread about half of the sliced mushrooms across the bottom.
3. Add the steaks
Place the beef patties over the mushrooms, overlapping them slightly only when necessary. Scatter the remaining mushrooms around and over the patties.
4. Make the gravy
In a bowl, whisk together the beef broth, brown gravy mix, onion soup mix, and Worcestershire sauce until smooth.
Pour the gravy mixture evenly over the beef patties and mushrooms.
5. Slow cook
Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours or HIGH for 2 1/2–3 1/2 hours, until the patties are cooked through and tender.
6. Thicken the gravy
About 15–20 minutes before serving, mix the cornstarch with cold water until completely smooth. Stir it into the gravy in the slow cooker.
Cover again and let it cook for another 15–20 minutes, until the gravy becomes thick and glossy.
7. Serve
Carefully transfer the Salisbury steaks to plates and spoon plenty of mushroom gravy over the top.
Serve with mashed potatoes, rice, egg noodles, or roasted vegetables.
Helpful Tip
For an even deeper flavor, brown the patties in a skillet for 2–3 minutes per side before placing them in the slow cooker. This step is optional, but it gives the finished Salisbury steak a deliciously savory crust.
