I started showing up every day.
I bought her groceries.
I picked up prescriptions.
I changed light bulbs.
I cleaned the gutters.
I drove her to doctor’s appointments.
I fixed broken cabinet doors.
I even organized her medication into those little Monday-to-Sunday pill boxes.
And Mrs. Rhode complained about absolutely everything.
“You walk too loudly.”
“You parked crooked.”
“Your hair looks ridiculous.”
“You bought the wrong bread.”
Sometimes I wanted to laugh.
Sometimes I wanted to scream.
But I kept coming back.
Because beneath all that complaining was something I hadn’t expected.
