Grey hair is a natural part of aging that occurs when hair follicles produce less melanin, the pigment responsible for hair color. While there is no scientifically proven home remedy that permanently reverses grey hair, roasted onion peel has become a popular traditional ingredient used as a natural hair rinse or temporary hair-darkening treatment.
This DIY recipe may help add shine and create a darker appearance on some hair types, but it will not permanently turn white hair black or restore natural pigment.
Why Onion Peels?
Onion peels contain beneficial plant compounds, including:
- Quercetin (a powerful antioxidant)
- Flavonoids
- Polyphenols
- Natural pigments
These compounds may help:
- Protect hair from environmental damage
- Improve scalp health
- Add natural shine
- Temporarily enhance darker tones in the hair
However, there is no strong clinical evidence that onion peels can reverse grey hair or permanently restore melanin production.

- 2 cups (500 ml) water
- 1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional)
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel (optional)

Step 1: Roast the Onion Peels
Place the dry onion peels in a clean frying pan.
Roast over low heat for 8–10 minutes, stirring frequently.

Reduce the heat and simmer for 20–30 minutes.
The liquid should become a deep brown color.

Allow the mixture to cool completely.
Strain through a fine mesh sieve or cheesecloth to remove the peels.

- 1 tablespoon coconut oil
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera gel
Mix well.
Step 5: Store
Pour the liquid into a clean glass bottle or spray bottle.
