A signature block.
My name.
My rank.
My stomach went cold.
Voss turned the page toward me.
“Ma’am,” she said, “we believe your credentials and signature have been forged on at least six recommendation letters connected to Phantom Reef subcontract awards.”
My father whispered, “Evelyn.”
Not Admiral.
Not ma’am.
Evelyn.
Like I was still the child he could summon back into obedience.
I took the page.
The signature was beautiful.
Precise.
Practiced.
Mine, almost.
Almost.
My eyes moved down the letter, then stopped on the final line.
Recommended with full confidence, Rear Admiral Evelyn Hart.
My father had not simply dismissed my career.
He had used it.
Caroline pushed through the hallway, mascara already streaking. “This is insane. Dad wouldn’t do that.”
Nathan did not speak.
That silence told me he was already calculating timelines, access points, motives. The same way I was.
Special Agent Voss looked at me with measured caution.
“There is one more issue, ma’am.”
I lifted my eyes from the forged signature.
She removed another document from the folder.
“This evening, fifteen minutes before your arrival, an encrypted file associated with Phantom Reef was opened from a laptop registered to this address.”
My father shook his head. “I don’t know anything about encrypted files.”
Voss continued as if he had not spoken.
“The login attempt failed twice. On the third attempt, the user entered a recovery phrase.”
My pulse slowed.
A recovery phrase was not something guessed. Not something found in a golf brochure or copied from an old résumé.
Special Agent Voss looked down at the page.
“The phrase was: Caroline deserves the stars.”
The hallway went utterly still.
Caroline stopped crying.
Her face did something I had never seen before.
It hardened.
Not with confusion.
With recognition.
Nathan turned to her slowly.
“Caroline?”
She took one step back.
My father closed his eyes.
My mother made a sound like her heart had cracked.
I stared at my sister, at the diamond on her hand, at the woman who had spent the evening laughing at the idea that I mattered.
And suddenly I understood that Part 2 of the evening had only just begun.
