Oregano: Health Benefits, Traditional Uses, and How to Use This Aromatic Plant

  • by

One popular claim says that oregano can cleanse the blood, kidneys, liver, and pancreas simultaneously.

There is no reliable clinical evidence that eating oregano performs this kind of detoxification.

Your liver processes many substances, while your kidneys filter waste products and regulate fluid and electrolyte balance. These organs already perform essential functions without requiring a special cleansing herb.

The pancreas also has important digestive and hormonal functions. Oregano has not been shown to detoxify or repair it.

Although oregano can be part of a nutritious diet, it should not be used to treat kidney disease, liver disease, or diabetes.

4. How to Prepare Fresh Oregano Tea

If you enjoy oregano’s flavor, you can prepare a simple herbal infusion for occasional enjoyment.

Ingredients

  • 4–5 fresh oregano leaves that have been correctly identified and thoroughly washed
  • 1 cup of hot water, approximately 250 ml
  • A little honey, optional

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Select the leaves.

Use fresh culinary oregano from a trusted source. Do not consume an unidentified plant simply because it resembles the one in a photograph.

Step 2: Wash thoroughly.

Rinse the leaves under clean running water to remove dirt and other surface contaminants.

Step 3: Heat the water.

Bring the water to a boil, then allow it to cool briefly.

Step 4: Prepare the infusion.

Place the leaves in a cup and pour the hot water over them.

Step 5: Let it steep.

Cover the cup and leave the leaves to infuse for approximately 5–10 minutes.

Step 6: Strain and serve.

Remove the leaves and allow the drink to cool to a comfortable temperature. Add a little honey if desired.

This preparation is a traditional-style herbal drink, not a proven treatment for any medical condition. There is no established dosage of oregano tea for curing disease, and drinking more does not necessarily provide greater benefits.

5. Important Safety Precautions

Although oregano is generally used safely in ordinary culinary amounts, concentrated extracts and essential oils are different from the leaves used in cooking.

Keep these precautions in mind:

  • Do not swallow oregano essential oil or place it in your nose or ears.
  • Do not use oregano as a replacement for prescribed medications.
  • If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult a healthcare professional before using concentrated oregano preparations medicinally.
  • If you take regular medication or have a chronic medical condition, ask a healthcare professional or pharmacist about possible interactions before using concentrated herbal products.
  • Stop using the preparation if you develop an allergic reaction or other unexpected symptoms.

People with asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, liver disease, or persistent digestive problems should not delay appropriate treatment in favor of herbal remedies.

6. Simple Ways to Include Oregano in Your Daily Diet

You do not need to prepare a special remedy to enjoy oregano. This versatile herb can easily become part of everyday meals.

Add it to salads: Sprinkle finely chopped fresh oregano over tomatoes, cucumbers, and olive oil.

Season roasted vegetables: Combine oregano with garlic, olive oil, and black pepper.

Flavor homemade sauces: Add fresh or dried oregano to tomato sauce for pasta or
