Every single one gave him the exact same answer: “We can’t help you, Victor. Colton owns our debt too. What did you do to piss off the Colton family?”
At 2:00 AM, my private phone lit up with dozens of frantic calls from Victor and Sabrina. I didn’t answer.
Finally, a voicemail from Victor popped up, his voice slurred with panic, sobbing into the receiver: “Caleb… please. I don’t understand! The banks are saying you’re Caleb Colton. Please, talk to Sabrina. We’re ruined. The sheriff’s department just delivered an eviction notice for our house! Everything is gone!”
A minute later, a text from Sabrina arrived: “Caleb, baby, please! It was just a harmless prank! I love you! You can’t let your family destroy us! We’re supposed to be married!”
I stared at the messages, remembering the cruelty in her eyes as she pulled the trigger on the hose, spraying freezing water on an innocent, kind woman whose only crime was loving her son.
I typed back a single reply:
“You wanted to wash the smell of poverty off her. Now you’ll finally know what it smells like.”
I blocked both numbers.

Their empire had ended precisely as promised—before sunrise.
