My Ex Vanished Six Years Ago—Then I Found Her at the Airport With Two Boys Who Had My Eyes

  • by

Part 1 — “Your Mother Never Told You, Did She?”

“Your mother never told you, did she?”

Claire’s question seemed to silence the entire airport around me.

I stared at her.

“What didn’t she tell me?”

Claire looked at the boys.

The older-looking one was still asleep against her side. The other had curled himself around her stomach, one tiny hand resting protectively against her pregnant belly.

I swallowed.

“Claire… are those my sons?”

Her eyes filled with tears.

Before she could answer, the airport announcement echoed overhead.

“Passengers traveling to Northbridge, flight 728 has been delayed an additional forty-five minutes.”

Neither of us moved.

Finally, Claire whispered:

“They’re twins.”

My heart pounded.

“How old?”

“Five.”

Five.

The number hit me harder than anything else.

Five years ago, Claire had disappeared.

I looked at the boys again.

Five years old.

The resemblance wasn’t something I could explain away anymore.

I crouched beside them.

One boy slowly opened his eyes.

He looked directly at me.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then he frowned.

“Mommy?”

Claire touched his shoulder.

“It’s okay, Noah.”

The other boy woke too.

He stared at me.

Then at his brother.

Then back at me.

“Who is he?”

Claire closed her eyes.

I stood.

“I’m Adrian.”

The boy tilted his head.

“Are you a policeman?”

Despite everything, I almost laughed.

“No.”

“Then why are you wearing a suit?”

“Because I was going somewhere for work.”

The boy looked at Claire.

“Mommy knows him?”

Claire’s silence answered for her.

I looked at her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

She finally met my eyes.

“Because I tried.”

My chest tightened.

“What?”

“I tried to tell you, Adrian.”

She reached into her worn handbag with trembling fingers.

Then she pulled out a small envelope.

My name was written across the front.

In handwriting I recognized instantly.

Adrian Bennett.

She held it toward me.

“I wrote this six years ago.”

I took it.

My fingers shook.

“Why didn’t I receive it?”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“Because your mother made sure you never saw it.”

Part 2 — The Letter

I opened the envelope.

Inside was a single folded sheet of paper.

I recognized Claire’s handwriting immediately.

Adrian,

If you’re reading this, then somehow my letter reached you.

I’m pregnant.

Not with one baby.

Two.

They’re yours.

I know you’re going to ask why I disappeared.

I didn’t leave because I stopped loving you.

I left because your mother gave me a choice I never wanted to make.

My hands stopped moving.

I looked at Claire.

“What choice?”

She looked toward the airport windows.

“She told me that if I stayed with you, she’d destroy you.”

I shook my head.

“My mother?”

“She had photographs.”

“What photographs?”

“Photographs of you with another woman.”

My stomach dropped.

Claire continued.

“She told me you’d been seeing someone else while you were away.”

“That was a lie.”

“I know that now.”

I stared at her.

“You knew?”

“Eventually.”

“Then why didn’t you come back?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because by the time I learned the truth, I was already gone.”

She told me everything.

My mother had visited Claire shortly after I left for the hotel opening.

She had shown Claire photographs.

They had been carefully taken to make it appear that I was romantically involved with another woman.

Then Margaret had made her offer.

Leave Adrian quietly, and Claire would receive enough money to disappear.

If she refused, Margaret threatened to ruin Claire’s reputation, destroy her career, and make sure she never got near the Bennett family again.

But there was one final threat.

“If you tell Adrian you’re pregnant,” Margaret had said, “I’ll make sure your children are taken from you.”

Claire had been terrified.

She had no powerful family.

No money.

No lawyers.

No protection.

So she left.

She gave birth alone.

She raised the twins alone.

And every birthday, she wondered whether I would somehow find them.

I looked at Noah and his brother.

“What are their names?”

Claire hesitated.

“Noah and Lucas.”

I crouched beside them again.

“Hi, Noah. Hi, Lucas.”

Lucas looked at me suspiciously.

“Do you know Mommy?”

I smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

“Are you her friend?”

I looked at Claire.

“No.”

Her eyes met mine.

“We used to love each other.”

Noah frowned.

“What happened?”

Claire whispered:

“Life happened.”

I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry.

Then Claire suddenly grabbed her stomach.

Her face tightened with pain.

I immediately stood.

“Claire?”

She took a slow breath.

“I’m okay.”

But she wasn’t.

Her hand remained pressed against her belly.

And then I noticed something else.

There was a hospital bracelet around her wrist.

My heart sank.

“Why are you at the airport?”

She looked away.

“I was trying to leave Bellmere.”

“Why?”

She didn’t answer.

“Claire.”

Finally she whispered:

“Because someone found us.”

Part 3 — Someone Was Watching

“What do you mean someone found you?”

Claire’s face had gone pale.

“I received a message three days ago.”

“From whom?”

“I don’t know.”

She pulled out her phone.

There was a single message.

You can’t hide forever.

Below it was a photograph.

A picture of Noah and Lucas walking home from school.

Taken from across the street.

My blood ran cold.

“Who took this?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did you go to the police?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

“They said there wasn’t enough evidence.”

I looked around the terminal.

Suddenly every stranger seemed suspicious.

“How long have you known someone was following you?”

“Three months.”

“Three months?”

Claire nodded.

“I changed apartments twice.”

My anger rose.

“You should have called me.”

She laughed bitterly.

“You didn’t even know your sons existed.”

“Because your mother—”

“I know.”

She looked exhausted.

Then Lucas tugged at my sleeve.

I looked down.

He was holding something.

A photograph.

It showed Claire standing beside two newborn babies.

On the back was written:

December 14.

I stared at it.

“That’s their birthday.”

“Yes.”

I looked at the twins again.

December 14.

My birthday was December 14.

I felt my throat tighten.

Claire noticed.

“I gave them your birthday.”

“Why?”

“Because even though you weren’t there, I wanted them to have something from you.”

I couldn’t speak.

Then my phone rang.

It was my chief financial officer.

“Adrian, where are you?”

“At the airport.”

“The board meeting has been moved online. You can join from there.”

I looked at Claire.

“No.”

“What?”

“Cancel everything.”

“Adrian, this acquisition—”

“I said cancel it.”

I hung up.

Claire stared at me.

“You can’t just throw away your career.”

“I’ve spent six years building a life because I thought you abandoned me.”

I looked at the boys.

“I’m not losing another six years.”

For the first time, Claire smiled.

It was small.

Almost invisible.

Then a man walked past us.

He wore a gray coat.

He didn’t look at Claire.

But he stopped beside a trash can.

Dropped something inside.

And continued walking.

I watched him disappear into the crowd.

Something felt wrong.

I walked to the trash can.

Inside was a small envelope.

My name was written on it.

I opened it.

There was only one sentence.

Ask your mother why she paid me to make Claire disappear.
