Police found Claire that night.
She didn’t run.
She was sitting inside her apartment surrounded by medical records.
When investigators entered, she simply said:
“You finally figured it out.”
The detective asked why she had approached Emma.
Claire started crying.
“I never wanted to hurt her.”
“Then what were you doing?”
“I was trying to prove something.”
“What?”
“That the hospital was hiding dangerous side effects from the research program.”
She explained that several children had developed unexplained symptoms.
Headaches.
Fatigue.
Fainting.
Loss of appetite.
The hospital had blamed stress.
But Claire believed something was wrong with the medication being tested.
She had tried to expose it.
Then she discovered that senior administrators were altering records.
She was fired.
Threatened.
And blacklisted.
“So you used Emma?”
Claire shook her head.
“I gave her tiny doses because I needed someone to prove the medication was causing neurological symptoms.”
The detective stared at her.
“You endangered a child.”
Claire broke down.
“I know.”
I felt furious.
“You could have killed my daughter.”
Claire looked at me.
“I was wrong.”
“No.”
My voice shook.
“You weren’t just wrong.”
“You were willing to sacrifice my child.”
She lowered her head.
“I know.”
PART 9 — The Final Revelation
But there was still one unanswered question.
Who had ordered Claire to approach Emma?
Claire refused to answer.
Until investigators found the financial records.
Payments had been made to Claire from an anonymous account.
The account was connected to the research company.
But the person authorizing the payments wasn’t a hospital administrator.
It was the company’s chief medical officer.
And his name was Dr. Nathan Reed.
Michael’s supervisor.
The same man who had repeatedly told Michael to keep quiet about missing medication.
The same man who had encouraged Michael to give Emma something for her headaches.
The same man who had told Michael the sedative was harmless.
Michael finally understood.
“He knew.”
The detective nodded.
“He knew exactly what was happening.”
Then the doctor looked at Michael.
“And he used you to get close to your daughter.”
Michael covered his face.
“I trusted him.”
I looked at my husband.
“You should have trusted me.”
Tears filled his eyes.
“I know.”
