Max, the old dog that nobody wanted

  • by

« Tell him to hang in there, I’m coming. »

One of the technicians then contacted a shelter specializing in caring for elderly dogs.

When Gracinda, the shelter’s founder, heard about Max, she didn’t hesitate. It didn’t matter that all the spaces were already taken. It also didn’t matter that the veterinary bills were piling up.

Her answer was simple: tell Max to hang in there, she was coming.

When Gracinda entered the examination room, the old dog was lying in a corner on a blanket.

His immense body seemed exhausted. His muzzle was almost entirely grey and his hips trembled every time he tried to stand up.

But as soon as Gracinda knelt beside him, something changed.

Max slowly raised his head. Then, with visible effort, he dragged himself over to her before resting his heavy head against her chest.

Gracinda later admitted to having cried at that precise moment, sitting on the floor of the clinic.

Because older dogs sometimes seem to understand when a person no longer just tolerates them, but actually chooses to take care of them.

A refuge where Max could finally rest

At the shelter, a quiet room was set up for him. The floor was covered with orthopedic mattresses and nightlights were installed in the corners.

During the first few nights, Max barely slept. The slightest noise made him jump.

Gracinda would sometimes wake up at two in the morning and find him sitting silently by the door.

As if he were still waiting for someone to come back for him.

But no one returned.

Gradually, thanks to the treatment and attention he received, his behavior began to change.

Max started carrying stuffed animals around the house. He followed the volunteers to the kitchen hoping to get something to eat. When someone sat down near him, he would snuggle up to them and thoroughly enjoy the cuddles.

After so many changes of home, he finally seemed able to relax.

In search of Max’s last home

Now, in the morning, Max likes to lie in the sun near the entrance while the volunteers have their coffee next to him.

The fear that once filled his gaze gradually faded away. In its place appeared something much gentler: relief.

But for Gracinda, Max’s story is not over yet.

She began to search for what this old dog had never truly found since Henrique’s death: a lasting home.

Not a new temporary step.

Not a family that will pass it on to someone else when its presence becomes too burdensome.

A home where he can stay.

His last home.

What Max really needs

Max’s story reminds us of a simple idea: an older dog doesn’t necessarily need a perfect family.

Despite losing Henrique, changing homes several times and being taken to a clinic to be euthanized, Max still continued to poke his nose towards humans and wag his tail when spoken to.

What he needs today is much simpler: someone who truly chooses him and who, this time, stays by his side.
