I’m Shocked! Can Onion Peels and Cloves Help Hair Grow? A Natural Hair Care Recipe

  • by

If you want to experiment with these ingredients as part of a cosmetic hair-care routine, here is a simple preparation.

Ingredients

  • Peels from one clean onion.
  • ½ teaspoon of whole cloves.
  • 2 cups of water.
  • A small saucepan.
  • A fine strainer.
  • A clean glass container.

Step 1: Prepare the Onion Peels

  1. Remove the outer dry layers of one onion.
  2. Wash the peels thoroughly to remove dirt.
  3. Place them in a clean bowl.
  4. Remove any spoiled or moldy pieces.

Step 2: Add the Cloves

  1. Measure half a teaspoon of whole cloves.
  2. Place the cloves in the saucepan.
  3. Add the cleaned onion peels.
  4. Pour in two cups of drinking water.

Step 3: Prepare the Mixture

  1. Place the saucepan over low heat.
  2. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
  3. Allow it to simmer for approximately 5 minutes.
  4. Turn off the heat.
  5. Let the mixture cool completely.

The water will develop a reddish-brown color from the onion peels.

Step 4: Strain and Store

  1. Strain the liquid using a fine strainer.
  2. Remove all onion peel and clove particles.
  3. Transfer the liquid into a clean container.
  4. Keep it refrigerated.
  5. Prepare small fresh batches and discard any leftovers after 24 hours.

Do not add essential oils or concentrated clove extracts to this preparation.

Step 5: How to Use It

  1. Perform a small skin patch test first.
  2. If there is no irritation after 24–48 hours, apply a small amount to an inconspicuous area of the scalp.
  3. Avoid applying it to broken, irritated, or inflamed skin.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  5. Stop immediately if itching, burning, redness, or swelling develops.

This preparation is an experimental cosmetic rinse, not a proven hair-growth treatment. There is no established effective frequency or duration for promoting hair growth.

4. Can Onion Peels and Cloves Fill Bald Spots in 16 Days?

This is one of the most common questions surrounding homemade hair treatments.

Unfortunately, there is no reliable clinical evidence that onion peel and clove water can produce substantial new hair growth in 16 days.

Hair follicles operate through natural growth cycles, and visible changes generally take months rather than days.

A bald spot may also have different causes, including:

  • Androgenetic alopecia (pattern hair loss).
  • Alopecia areata.
  • Fungal scalp infections.
  • Traction alopecia.
  • Nutritional deficiencies.
  • Hormonal disorders.

The correct treatment depends on identifying the underlying cause.
