Frequent nighttime urination can sometimes be associated with diabetes.
When blood glucose levels become too high, the kidneys may remove some of the excess glucose through urine. This can increase urine production.
Nighttime urination associated with excessive thirst, unexplained weight loss, increased hunger, fatigue, or blurred vision deserves medical attention.
A blood glucose test or HbA1c test can help determine whether diabetes may be contributing to the symptoms.
Urinary Tract Infections
A urinary tract infection can cause frequent urination and an urgent need to use the bathroom.
Other symptoms may include burning or pain while urinating, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, lower abdominal discomfort, or blood in the urine.
If a urinary infection is suspected, medical evaluation is important because treatment may be necessary.
Fever, chills, back or side pain, vomiting, or feeling very unwell can indicate that an infection may have progressed and requires prompt medical attention.
Swollen Legs and Fluid Retention
Some people experience swelling in their ankles or legs during the day.
When they lie down at night, some of this accumulated fluid can return to the bloodstream. The kidneys may then process the additional fluid, potentially increasing urine production overnight.
Persistent swelling can have several causes, including problems involving the veins, heart, kidneys, liver, or certain medications.
New or worsening leg swelling should therefore be discussed with a healthcare professional, particularly if it occurs with shortness of breath or rapid weight gain.
