The farmhouse door opened just before sunrise.
I jumped to my feet.
Marco stood there.
Alone.
No security.
No anger.
Just exhaustion.
His eyes immediately went to me.
Then to the staircase.
“Are they here?”
I couldn’t speak.
He took one step forward.
“Please.”
His voice broke.
“Tell me they’re here.”
I nodded.
Marco closed his eyes.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
“I knew it.”
He looked at me.
“I knew those children were mine.”
“How?”
“Mila has my mother’s eyes.”
I couldn’t answer.
He climbed the stairs slowly.
I followed.
At the bedroom door, he stopped.
Two little bodies slept beneath the blankets.
Mila’s hand rested against Leo’s.
Marco covered his mouth.
He began crying.
Not quietly.
Not elegantly.
Like a man who had spent three years grieving something he hadn’t known how to name.
I whispered,
“Don’t wake them.”
He nodded.
He sat beside the bed.
For several minutes, he simply watched them breathe.
Then Leo opened his eyes.
He looked at Marco.
“Who are you?”
Marco froze.
I expected him to lie.
Instead, he whispered:
“I’m your daddy.”
Leo stared at him.
Then he looked at me.
“Mommy?”
I nodded.
Mila woke next.
She looked at Marco.
Then at her brother.
Then back at him.
“You look like us.”
Marco smiled through tears.
“That’s because you look like me.”
Mila smiled.
“Are you really our daddy?”
He nodded.
“Yes.”
She held out her hand.
Marco took it.
And the man who had faced Chicago’s most dangerous men without fear began sobbing again.
PART 7 — The Question I Needed Answered
After the twins went back to sleep, Marco and I sat on the porch.
I looked at him.
“Tell me the truth.”
“I will.”
“Did you sleep with my sister?”
He closed his eyes.
“No.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“She came into our bedroom that night.”
“She was in your bed.”
“Yes.”
“Then explain it.”
Marco looked at me.
“She drugged me.”
I stared at him.
“I woke up when you opened the door.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“I tried.”
He shook his head.
“You were already running.”
“I called you.”
“I never got the calls.”
“Because Sophia had taken my phone.”
I remembered the night.
The rain.
My phone disappearing.
The unanswered calls.
Everything suddenly made sense.
Marco reached into his pocket.
He pulled out an old photograph.
It was from the night I left.
A security camera had captured Sophia entering the house.
Then leaving twenty minutes later.
With my phone.
I stared at the image.
“I thought you betrayed me.”
“I thought you abandoned me.”
We both fell silent.
Three years had been stolen from us.
Three years we could never get back.
