I lost one of my twin babies during labor—when the nurse placed my surviving son in my arms, she leaned in and whispered

PART 3

“What are you doing with my phone?” Mark repeated.

I looked at him and forced my hands to stop shaking.

“Nothing. I thought it was mine.”

He stared at me for several seconds.

Then his expression softened.

“You’re still confused from the medication.”

He reached for the phone.

I handed it to him.

But before he could put it in his pocket, another notification appeared.

D: Did you tell her about the second envelope?

Mark froze.

So did I.

“The second envelope?” I asked.

His eyes met mine.

For the first time since I had woken up, I saw something I had never seen in my husband before.

Fear.

He quickly locked the phone.

“You’re tired,” he said. “We should both get some rest.”

“No.”

He stopped.

“I want to know what happened to my son.”

Mark’s jaw tightened.

“I already told you.”

“No. You told me he died.”

His face went completely pale.

I continued.

“But I saw the video.”

The room became silent.

Mark looked toward the hallway.

Then he closed the door.

“You shouldn’t have watched that.”

My heart pounded.

“Why?”

He sat on the edge of the chair and covered his face with both hands.

“I didn’t have a choice.”

“What does that mean?”

He looked up at me.

“I was trying to protect you.”

“From who?”

He didn’t answer.

Then there was a loud crash outside.

A nurse shouted.

People began running down the hallway.

Mark suddenly stood.

“We have to leave.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“Now.”

He grabbed my bag.

“Mark, where are we going?”

He looked directly into my eyes.

“Somewhere they can’t find us.”

Before I could respond, Judy burst through the door.

Her face was terrified.

“He’s here.”

Mark turned toward her.

“Who?”

Judy shook her head.

“The man who took the baby.”

My blood ran cold.

Then Judy looked at me.

“He’s not working alone.”

She pulled a folded piece of paper from her pocket and placed it in my hand.

“Your husband didn’t arrange the baby’s disappearance.”

I looked at Mark.

“Then who did?”

Judy swallowed.

“The hospital.”

I unfolded the paper.

There was a name written on it.

And underneath it was a photograph.

I recognized the woman from the video.

But the name beneath her picture made my entire body go numb.

Because it was my own sister’s name.

And I had buried my sister six years ago.
