1. Wash the fig leaves
Choose young, tender leaves from a healthy fig tree. Wash them thoroughly under cool running water to remove dirt and debris.
Trim away the thick stems and any damaged portions.
2. Cook the leaves
Bring a pot of water to a gentle boil. Add the fig leaves and cook for approximately 5–8 minutes, until they become tender.
Drain well and allow them to cool slightly.
3. Blend the sauce
Place the cooked leaves in a blender with the garlic, olive oil, lemon juice, salt, pepper, and ½ cup water.
Blend until the mixture becomes smooth and creamy.
Add a little more water if you want a thinner sauce.
4. Make it creamy
For a richer sauce, add 2 tablespoons of tahini or plain yogurt and blend again until completely combined.
Taste and adjust the salt and lemon juice according to your preference.
5. Warm gently
Transfer the sauce to a small saucepan and warm it over low heat for 2–3 minutes. Avoid prolonged boiling.
6. Serve
Pour the warm green sauce into a serving bowl and drizzle a little olive oil over the top.
Finish with toasted sesame seeds if desired.

A Few Important Tips
Not every plant that resembles a fig is safe to eat, so make sure the leaves are correctly identified as common edible fig (Ficus carica) and have not been treated with pesticides.
Fresh fig leaves contain a milky sap that can irritate the skin in some people, so wash the leaves well and avoid handling the sap unnecessarily. Cooking the leaves also helps soften their texture and flavor.
This is a culinary recipe, not a medicinal preparation. There isn’t good evidence that fig-leaf sauce detoxifies the body or treats diseases.
