Hibiscus Tea: Benefits, Recipe, and What Science Really Says

  • by

Hibiscus tea is a vibrant ruby-red herbal drink made from the dried calyces of the hibiscus flower (Hibiscus sabdariffa). It has a tart, cranberry-like flavor and is enjoyed around the world both hot and cold. Rich in antioxidants, hibiscus tea can be a healthy beverage, but it is not a miracle cure despite many claims on social media.

The image suggests combining hibiscus with cinnamon and bay leaves. This makes a flavorful herbal infusion, but there is no scientific evidence that it cures diseases or produces dramatic health effects.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup dried hibiscus flowers
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 4 cups (1 liter) water
  • 1–2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup (optional)
  • Juice of ½ lemon (optional)

Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Fine mesh strainer
  • Heatproof pitcher or bowl
  • Glass container for storage

Step 1: Boil the Water

Pour the water into a saucepan and bring it to a gentle boil.

Step 2: Add the Ingredients

Add:

  • Dried hibiscus flowers
  • Cinnamon stick
  • Bay leaves

Reduce the heat and simmer for 10–15 minutes.

Step 3: Steep

Remove the saucepan from the heat.

Cover and let the tea steep for another 10 minutes to deepen the flavor.

Step 4: Strain

Strain the liquid through a fine mesh strainer into a pitcher.

Discard the hibiscus flowers, cinnamon stick, and bay leaves.

Step 5: Sweeten (Optional)

After the tea has cooled slightly, stir in honey or maple syrup if desired.

Add fresh lemon juice for extra brightness.

Step 6: Serve

Enjoy:

  • Warm as a comforting herbal tea.
  • Chilled over ice as a refreshing summer drink.

Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
