Here’s a Simple Old-Fashioned Trick for Cleaning an Oven

  • by

For baked-on grease that refuses to disappear, make a simple paste using baking soda and a small amount of water.

Spread the paste over stubborn areas, avoiding heating elements and other components that should not be covered with cleaning products.

Allow it to sit for several hours or overnight if appropriate for your oven’s materials and manufacturer’s instructions.

Then wipe away the paste with a damp cloth.

Baking soda is mildly abrasive, so use a soft cloth or sponge and avoid aggressive scrubbing that could damage the oven’s finish.

Don’t Forget the Oven Door

The inside of the oven door often collects grease and food splashes.

Apply your chosen gentle cleaning method to the glass according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. A soft microfiber cloth can help remove loosened residue without scratching the surface.

Avoid using abrasive tools on glass unless the manufacturer specifically says they are safe.

Clean the Oven Racks Separately

Remove the racks and soak them in warm water with dish soap.

Allow them to sit long enough for grease and food residue to soften. Then scrub them gently with a non-abrasive sponge or brush.

Rinse thoroughly and dry them before putting them back into the oven.

If your oven racks have a special finish, check the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions before soaking or using strong cleaners.
