PART 3
Bao stared at the folder on the table.
“What’s this?”
I didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, I looked at the woman standing beside him.
She was already reaching for her purse.
“You’re leaving?” I asked.
She looked at Bao.
He said nothing.
She grabbed her coat and hurried toward the door.
I stepped aside.
“Don’t worry. I’m not interested in you.”
She stopped.
“What?”
“I’m interested in the man who promised me eight years of loyalty while spending my money on you.”
She lowered her eyes and left.
The door closed.
Bao turned back toward me.
“Listen, I can explain.”
“You’ll have plenty of time to explain.”
I opened the folder.
Inside were printed bank statements, photographs, security footage timestamps, hotel receipts, and copies of messages.
His face changed with every page.
“You’ve been watching me?”
“No. You gave me the evidence yourself.”
He sat down.
“How long have you known?”
“Four months.”
He stared at me.
“And you never said anything?”
“I wanted to know how far you’d go.”
He looked down at the documents.
Then I placed one final sheet in front of him.
“This is the property transfer.”
His eyes widened.
“That isn’t real.”
“It is.”
“I was going to fix it.”
“You tried to transfer $42,000 and put our house at risk.”
“I needed the money.”
“For what?”
He said nothing.
I already knew the answer.
Rachel.
He had been planning to leave me and use our savings to start a new life with her.
But there was another document beneath the transfer papers.
I slid it across the table.
Bao read it.
His face went completely blank.
“What is this?”
“A legal notice.”
He looked at me.
“You hired a lawyer?”
“Before I came home.”
He stood up.
“You can’t do this.”
“I already did.”
He began pacing.
“Where are the kids?”
“At Mai’s house.”
His eyes filled with panic.
“Can I see them?”
I shook my head.
“Not tonight.”
“Please.”
“You’ve had months to think about them.”
He lowered his head.
Then he whispered:
“I never thought you’d actually leave me.”
I looked at him.
“That’s because you thought I was thousands of miles away.”
Silence.
Then I placed one more envelope on the table.
“This is for you.”
He opened it.
Inside was a photograph of Emily sitting at the kitchen table.
On the back, she had written:
“I knew Mom would come home.”
Bao stared at the photograph.
His shoulders began shaking.
For the first time, he seemed to understand what his betrayal had actually done.
It wasn’t just our marriage he had damaged.
His children had watched him lie.
They had watched women come and go.
And my fifteen-year-old daughter had been forced to carry a secret she never should have had to carry.
Bao wiped his face.
“Can I at least tell Emily I’m sorry?”
I looked at him for a long moment.
“That’s between you and her.”
He nodded.
Then he asked the question I had been expecting.
“Do you still love me?”
I took a breath.
“Once, I loved you enough to trust you with my life.”
He looked hopeful.
“But trust doesn’t come back because someone says they’re sorry.”
His eyes dropped.
I picked up my bag.
“I didn’t come home to destroy you, Bao.”
He looked at me.
“I came home to protect what you were willing to destroy.”
Then I walked out.
Behind me, I heard him crying.
But I didn’t turn around.
Because for the first time in eight years…
I wasn’t walking away from my family.
I was walking toward a new life for me and my children.
And Bao finally had to face the consequences of the choices he had made while believing I was too far away to find out.
