Everyone With Fatty Liver Has This in Common? The Truth About Hidden Signs

  • by

A photo showing dark areas around the eyes, changes in facial appearance, and other subtle features may make you wonder whether your face can reveal that you have fatty liver disease.

The truth is more complicated.

There is no single facial sign that everyone with fatty liver has. In fact, metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), the newer term used for what was commonly called nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), is often a silent condition. Many people have few or no symptoms, even while fat is accumulating in the liver.

That means a dark circle under your eye, a facial fold, dry skin, or another ordinary facial feature cannot be used to diagnose fatty liver.

But there are real warning signs and risk factors that are worth knowing.

What Is Fatty Liver Disease?

Fatty liver occurs when excess fat accumulates in the liver.

When the condition is related to metabolic factors rather than significant alcohol use, it is commonly referred to as MASLD. Risk factors include overweight or obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, abnormal blood fats such as high triglycerides, high blood pressure, and metabolic syndrome.

For many people, fatty liver causes no obvious symptoms.

That is one reason it can go unnoticed for years.

Can You Tell From Your Face?

Not reliably.

The image accompanying this article suggests that certain facial features are signs of fatty liver, but this is not an established way to diagnose the condition.

A person’s face naturally changes with age, genetics, sleep, hydration, sun exposure, allergies, weight changes, and many other factors.

Dark circles under the eyes, for example, can have numerous causes and are not a specific indicator of liver disease.

Likewise, a line or fold around the mouth or nose does not mean that someone has a fatty liver.

If you are concerned about liver health, testing is far more useful than looking in the mirror.
