This old-fashioned creamy chicken noodle recipe is pure comfort food. Tender noodles coated in a rich, creamy sauce make it an easy family dinner that’s cozy, satisfying, and perfect for a busy evening.
Ingredients
- 2 pounds boneless, skinless chicken breasts
- 4 cups chicken broth
- 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of chicken soup
- 1 cup sour cream
- ½ cup butter
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste
- 12 ounces wide egg noodles
- ½ cup grated Parmesan cheese, optional
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley, optional
Step-by-Step Instructions
1. Add the chicken
Place the chicken breasts in the bottom of a slow cooker.
2. Add the creamy ingredients
Pour in the chicken broth and add the cream of chicken soup, butter, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, and salt. Stir gently around the chicken.
3. Cook the chicken
Cover and cook on LOW for 5–6 hours or until the chicken is completely cooked and tender.
4. Shred the chicken
Remove the chicken from the slow cooker and shred it into bite-sized pieces using two forks. Return the shredded chicken to the slow cooker.
5. Add the noodles
Break the egg noodles if desired and stir them into the hot broth mixture. Cover and cook for approximately 20–30 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the noodles are tender.
6. Make it extra creamy
Stir in the sour cream and optional Parmesan cheese. Mix gently until everything is smooth and creamy.
7. Let it rest
Turn off the slow cooker and let the noodles sit for about 5 minutes. The sauce will thicken slightly as it rests.
8. Serve
Garnish with fresh parsley and a little black pepper. Serve hot with warm biscuits, crusty bread, or a simple green salad.
Helpful Tip
If the noodles absorb too much liquid, stir in a little warm chicken broth or milk until the dish reaches the creamy consistency you like.
