Cloves for Tooth Pain: What They Can—and Can’t—Do

  • by

Ingredients

  • 2–3 whole cloves or
  • 1 drop of food-grade clove oil
  • 1 teaspoon carrier oil (olive or coconut oil)
  • Cotton swab

Step 1: Dilute the Clove Oil

If using clove essential oil:

Mix 1 drop of clove oil with 1 teaspoon of olive or coconut oil.

Never apply undiluted clove essential oil directly to the gums, as it may cause irritation or burns.

Step 2: Apply Carefully

Dip a cotton swab into the diluted mixture.

Gently dab it near the painful tooth for a few minutes.

Avoid swallowing the oil.

Alternative Method

If using whole cloves:

Place one whole clove near the sore tooth and gently bite down until the natural oils are released.

Remove it after several minutes.

What Cloves Cannot Do

Despite popular social media claims, cloves cannot:

  • Repair cavities
  • Regrow tooth enamel
  • Replace fillings
  • Cure tooth infections
  • Eliminate the need for dental treatment

If a cavity is causing pain, delaying treatment usually allows the decay to worsen.

How to Prevent Cavities

Healthy daily habits include:

  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Floss daily.
  • Limit sugary snacks and drinks.
  • Drink plenty of water.
  • Visit your dentist regularly for checkups and cleanings.
