Celery Juice: A Simple Way to Add More Vegetables to Your Day

  • by

Celery is a crisp, refreshing vegetable that contains water, fiber, vitamin K, folate, potassium, and other plant nutrients. It can be a useful addition to a balanced diet, especially when combined with a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and healthy sources of protein.

Although celery is often promoted online as a powerful “detox” that cleanses the blood, kidneys, liver, pancreas, and skin, the body already has its own systems for removing waste. The liver and kidneys continuously process and eliminate substances the body does not need, and no celery drink can cleanse all of these organs in one shot.

A simple celery drink can nevertheless be a refreshing way to consume more vegetables and fluids.

To prepare it, you will need 3–4 celery stalks, 1 cup of cold water, ½ green apple, and a small squeeze of fresh lemon juice. Wash all ingredients thoroughly before preparing the drink.

Cut the celery and apple into smaller pieces and place them in a blender. Add the water and blend until smooth. Add the lemon juice and blend briefly once more. You can strain the mixture if you prefer a thinner drink, or leave the pulp in to retain more of the fiber.

For a more filling version, add a small piece of cucumber or a handful of spinach. These ingredients provide additional plant nutrients without turning the drink into a sugary beverage.

If you prefer eating celery rather than drinking it, try adding chopped celery to salads, soups, bean dishes, omelets, or homemade vegetable dishes. Whole celery provides fiber that is reduced when vegetables are juiced and the pulp is discarded.

Celery can be part of a heart-healthy eating pattern, but it should not be used as a replacement for treatment for high blood pressure, kidney disease, liver disease, diabetes, or other medical conditions. People taking medications that affect blood pressure, fluid balance, or potassium should also avoid making large dietary changes without appropriate medical advice.

The best “detox” strategy is much simpler than a miracle juice: eat a wide variety of vegetables and fruits, drink an appropriate amount of water, limit excessive alcohol and highly processed foods, stay physically active, sleep adequately, and follow medical advice when you have an underlying condition.

Celery juice can therefore be a refreshing addition to a healthy routine, but its real value comes from providing fluids and nutrients—not from literally washing toxins out of the blood, kidneys, liver, pancreas, or skin.
