Castor Oil and Baking Soda Paste: What It Can (and Can’t) Do

  • by

For years, people have shared homemade recipes combining castor oil and baking soda for skin care and minor cosmetic concerns. While this simple mixture has been passed down through generations, there is no scientific evidence that it is a “healing paste” that cures diseases, removes cysts, eliminates moles, or treats serious medical conditions.

Used carefully, it may help soften rough skin, but baking soda can also be irritating, especially with frequent use.

Why These Ingredients?

Castor Oil

Castor oil is rich in ricinoleic acid, a fatty acid that acts as an emollient.

It may help:

  • Moisturize dry skin
  • Soften rough patches
  • Reduce moisture loss
  • Leave skin feeling smoother

Baking Soda

Baking soda is a mild abrasive that can help remove surface buildup from the skin.

However, it has a high pH and may:

  • Dry out the skin
  • Disrupt the skin’s natural barrier
  • Cause irritation if used too often

For this reason, it should only be used occasionally and with caution.
