Baking Soda on the Face: Benefits, Risks, and How to Use It Safely

  • by

Baking soda is a common household ingredient that has become a popular DIY skincare remedy on social media. Some people claim it can fade dark spots, reduce wrinkles, clear acne, and brighten the complexion. While baking soda can provide temporary exfoliation, there is no scientific evidence that it removes wrinkles, permanently fades dark spots, or eliminates dark circles. In fact, using it incorrectly may irritate and damage your skin.

Why Do People Use Baking Soda?

Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) has a fine, gritty texture that can help remove dead skin cells. After exfoliation, skin may feel smoother and appear brighter for a short time. However, these effects are temporary and should not be confused with long-term improvements in skin health.

Potential Benefits

Gentle Exfoliation

Baking soda can help remove dead skin cells, leaving the skin feeling softer and smoother.

Temporary Brightening

Exfoliating the outer layer of dead skin may make the complexion appear more radiant.

Oil Control

People with oily skin may notice that baking soda temporarily reduces surface oil.

Risks and Side Effects

The skin’s natural pH is slightly acidic (around 4.5–5.5), while baking soda is highly alkaline (pH about 9). Frequent use can disrupt the skin barrier and lead to:

  • Dryness
  • Redness
  • Irritation
  • Burning
  • Increased sensitivity
  • Peeling
  • Worsening of eczema or rosacea

For this reason, dermatologists generally do not recommend using baking soda as a regular facial treatment.
