Baking Soda Face Mask: What It Can (and Can’t) Do

  • by

Yogurt

  • Contains lactic acid, which provides gentle exfoliation.
  • Helps leave skin feeling softer.

Honey

  • Acts as a natural humectant, helping the skin retain moisture.
  • Has soothing properties.

Oats

  • Gently exfoliate without being harsh.
  • Can help calm dry or irritated skin.

Better Ways to Reduce Wrinkles and Dark Spots

For results supported by research, consider:

  • Wearing a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen every day.
  • Using a gentle moisturizer regularly.
  • Products containing retinolvitamin Cniacinamide, or azelaic acid, depending on your skin type.
  • Getting enough sleep and eating a balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables.

These approaches generally have much stronger evidence than homemade remedies.

Why Baking Soda Isn’t Recommended

Baking soda has a high pH, while healthy skin is naturally slightly acidic.

Regular use on the face may:

  • Dry out the skin
  • Cause irritation or burning
  • Disrupt the skin barrier
  • Increase sensitivity
  • Potentially worsen acne or redness in some people

For these reasons, dermatologists generally do not recommend using baking soda as a facial treatment.

Final Thoughts

A gentle honey and yogurt mask can leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated, but it won’t erase wrinkles or dark spots overnight. Healthy skin improves gradually through consistent skincare, daily sun protection, and evidence-based ingredients rather than harsh DIY treatments like baking soda.
