After 75: 6 Fruits You Should Add to Your Diet — But Can They Really Replace Eggs?

  • by

You may have seen the claim that “6 fruits can completely replace eggs and provide double the nutrition in just 3 days.” It sounds impressive, but there is an important distinction: fruit is nutritious, but fruit cannot nutritionally replace eggs as a source of protein.

For adults over 75, the goal should be a varied diet that provides enough protein, fiber, vitamins, minerals, and healthy fats. The National Institute on Aging recommends eating a variety of foods across the major food groups, including fruits and protein foods.

Here are six excellent fruits to include in a balanced diet.

🍌 1. Bananas

Bananas are convenient, soft, and easy to eat.

Why add them?

  • Provide carbohydrates for energy
  • Supply potassium
  • Provide some fiber
  • Easy to add to breakfast or snacks

Simple idea:

Slice one banana over plain yogurt and add a small handful of nuts.

Important: Banana is not a high-protein replacement for eggs, so pair it with a protein source.

🥝 2. Kiwi

Kiwi is a refreshing fruit that provides vitamin C and fiber.

How to enjoy it:

  1. Wash the fruit.
  2. Peel it if preferred.
  3. Slice it into small pieces.
  4. Add it to yogurt or oatmeal.

For older adults, softer foods can also be useful when chewing becomes difficult.

🫐 3. Berries

Strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, and blackberries are excellent additions to meals.

Easy serving:

Combine berries with:

  • Greek yogurt
  • Oatmeal
  • Cottage cheese
  • Nuts or seeds

This combination is much more nutritionally complete than eating fruit alone.

🍊 4. Oranges

Oranges provide vitamin C, fluids, and fiber when eaten whole.

Best way to eat them:

Choose the whole fruit rather than juice when possible. Whole fruit provides fiber and is generally more filling.

Wash the fruit, peel it, and separate it into segments.

🥑 5. Avocado

Although botanically a fruit, avocado is quite different from most sweet fruits.

It provides:

  • Unsaturated fats
  • Fiber
  • Potassium
  • Calories that can be useful for people struggling to maintain weight

Simple preparation:

Mash half an avocado onto whole-grain toast and add a protein source such as cottage cheese, yogurt, beans, or an egg.

🍎 6. Apples

Apples are another convenient source of fiber and nutrients.

Try this:

  1. Wash the apple thoroughly.
  2. Slice it into manageable pieces.
  3. Pair it with peanut or almond butter.
  4. Add yogurt or another protein-rich food if making it a meal.

The NIA notes that eating fruits with their skin can provide more fiber, provided they are washed thoroughly.

💪 The Most Important Part: Don’t Forget Protein

This is where the original claim needs correcting.

Fruit does not contain enough protein to replace eggs on an equivalent basis. Eggs are specifically included among protein foods, while fruits are their own food group. The NIA lists eggs, seafood, beans, nuts, seeds, and soy products among protein sources for older adults.

Protein is particularly important as we age because the body uses it to build and repair tissues. USDA research has also highlighted that inadequate protein intake can be a concern for some older adults.

So rather than thinking:

❌ “Fruit replaces eggs.”

Think:

✅ “Fruit + a good protein source = a more balanced meal.”
