Her eyelids fluttered once, then again.
The officer nearest the kitchen table leaned closer as the woman focused beyond his shoulder toward the open doorway.
Someone had already told her the twins were alive.
Her lips moved.
“Map.”
The officer thought he had heard her wrong.
“What did you say?”
Her fingers dragged weakly across the tabletop, stopping inches from the little backpack.
“Map,” she whispered again.
Her eyes closed before she could say anything else.
