PART 2
Daniel didn’t move.
His eyes were fixed on the room behind me.
For several seconds, he simply stood there, staring.
Then he whispered:
“How… how is this possible?”
I didn’t answer.
I stepped aside.
“Come in.”
He walked slowly into the house.
The children were gathered around the dining table. Fourteen of them—some grown, some nearly grown, and the youngest sitting quietly at the end.
Daniel looked at each face.
His eyes filled with tears.
“I’ve missed so much.”
I folded my arms.
“Yes. You have.”
He swallowed hard.
“I know I don’t deserve forgiveness.”
“No,” I said quietly. “You don’t.”
He lowered his head.
“I left because I was afraid.”
“You left because you chose another woman.”
“I was stupid.”
“You were.”
Silence filled the room.
Then Daniel noticed something sitting on the bookshelf.
A framed photograph.
His face changed.
“What’s that?”
I walked over and picked it up.
It was a photograph of our family from years earlier.
But there was something unusual about it.
One child was missing.
Daniel stared at the picture.
“Where is he?”
I looked at him.
“You remember when our fourteenth baby was born?”
He nodded slowly.
“Of course.”
“You remember how difficult that year was?”
“Yes.”
“You remember telling me you couldn’t afford another child?”
His eyes dropped.
“I remember.”
I took a breath.
“Then you should know that the night you left, I discovered something you never knew.”
Daniel looked up.
“What?”
I handed him a small envelope.
His hands trembled as he opened it.
Inside was an old hospital document.
He read it once.
Then again.
His face turned completely white.
“This…”
He couldn’t finish the sentence.
I watched him carefully.
“You were never the biological father of our fourteenth child.”
Daniel stared at me.
“What are you saying?”
“I discovered the truth after you left.”
He shook his head.
“No. That’s impossible.”
I reached for another document.
“The doctors made a mistake years ago. Your blood type and the baby’s didn’t match. I spent years trying to understand what happened.”
Daniel’s hands began shaking.
“Then whose child is he?”
I looked toward the hallway.
A young man stepped into the room.
Daniel stared at him.
The young man looked exactly like him.
Same eyes.
Same smile.
Same expression.
Daniel’s mouth fell open.
“But…”
I smiled sadly.
“There’s one more thing you need to know.”
The young man walked toward him.
“Hello, Dad.”
Daniel nearly collapsed into the chair.
Because the secret I had kept for all those years wasn’t that the boy wasn’t his.
It was something far more complicated.
Daniel had a son he had never known existed.
And that boy had been the reason I never called Daniel back.
