Here’s a Simple Old-Fashioned Trick for Cleaning an Oven

  • by

Cleaning an oven can feel like one of those household chores that everyone puts off. Grease splatters, baked-on food, and stubborn stains can build up over time, making the inside look far worse than it did when you first bought it.

Fortunately, you don’t always need harsh chemicals or hours of exhausting scrubbing. One simple old-fashioned approach is to use steam and gentle cleaning to soften the buildup before wiping it away.

The idea is simple: instead of trying to scrape away hardened grease immediately, loosen it first.

Start With a Cool Oven

Before cleaning, switch off the oven and make sure it is completely cool.

Remove the racks, trays, and any other removable accessories. Brush or wipe away loose crumbs and pieces of burnt food.

Never pour water directly onto the oven’s heating elements or electrical components.

Use Steam to Loosen Grease

Place an oven-safe baking dish or heat-resistant pan containing hot water on a suitable oven rack.

Heat the oven at a low temperature for a short period, following your appliance manufacturer’s instructions. The warm water will produce steam, which can help soften grease and dried food residue.

Afterward, switch the oven off and allow it to cool enough to clean safely.

The goal isn’t to cook the dirt away. The steam simply helps loosen the residue so that less effort is needed afterward.

Wipe the Interior

Once the oven is safe to handle, use a microfiber cloth or soft sponge to wipe the interior.

Start with the easiest areas and work toward the stubborn spots.

You may be surprised by how much residue comes away after it has been softened by steam.

For areas where grease remains, repeat the process rather than immediately attacking the surface with an abrasive scrubber.
