PART 2 — My Sister’s Secret

I stood behind the bedroom door, one hand pressed over Mila’s mouth and the other holding Leo against me.

Outside, footsteps moved through the bakery.

My sister’s voice floated upward.

“Check upstairs.”

I hadn’t heard Sophia’s voice in three years.

Not since the night I walked into my bedroom and found her with my husband.

I had believed that was the worst betrayal of my life.

I was wrong.

A floorboard creaked.

Someone was coming upstairs.

I looked around the tiny apartment.

There was nowhere to hide.

Then I remembered the bakery’s old service staircase.

I grabbed the twins.

“Stay quiet.”

We slipped through the back door and descended the narrow stairs.

Mrs. Pike was waiting at the bottom.

Her face was pale.

“This way.”

She pulled open a storage-room door.

“There’s an alley behind the building.”

I hugged her.

“Thank you.”

She squeezed my hand.

“Go.”

We ran.

Rain poured down as we crossed the alley.

Mila began crying.

“Mommy, where are we going?”

“Somewhere safe.”

Behind us, a car door slammed.

Then I heard a voice.

“ELENA!”

Marco.

I stopped.

For one terrible second, I wanted to turn around.

But then I remembered Sophia’s words.

Marco can’t know those children are alive.

Why?

What had happened three years ago?

And why was my own sister terrified of my husband discovering the truth?

I ran faster.

PART 3 — The Truth I Never Knew

We reached an abandoned farmhouse outside town.

It belonged to Mrs. Pike’s brother.

Nobody knew about it.

At least, that’s what I hoped.

The twins slept upstairs while I sat beside a cold fireplace.

My mind kept replaying Sophia’s words.

Then I heard a vehicle approaching.

My heart stopped.

But it wasn’t Marco.

It was Vincent.

Marco’s security chief.

He stepped out alone.

I immediately grabbed a fireplace poker.

“Stay back.”

Vincent stopped.

“I didn’t come to hurt you.”

“You brought men to my town.”

“I know.”

“You followed me.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

He looked exhausted.

“Because Marco wasn’t the one who sent them.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

Vincent lowered his voice.

“Your sister did.”

My stomach dropped.

“Why?”

“Because she’s been looking for you for three years.”

“I know.”

“No.”

He shook his head.

“You don’t understand.”

He reached into his coat and pulled out a file.

“This is everything Marco discovered after you disappeared.”

I didn’t take it.

“Why would he investigate?”

“Because he never believed you left voluntarily.”

I looked away.

“He saw what I saw.”

Vincent shook his head.

“No.”

I looked at him.

“He didn’t.”

Vincent opened the file.

Inside was a photograph.

It showed Sophia entering our house on the night I disappeared.

Behind her was another man.

I recognized him.

Julian Moretti.

Vincent’s younger brother.

My blood ran cold.

“What does this mean?”

Vincent answered quietly.

“Your sister wasn’t alone that night.”

PART 4 — Three Years Earlier

I remembered everything.

The rain.

The bedroom door.

Sophia standing beside my husband.

Marco’s shirt half-buttoned.

My scream.

My sister crying.

Marco chasing me through the hallway.

Then the stairs.

Then the front door.

I had driven through Chicago without knowing where I was going.

I discovered I was pregnant weeks later.

Not with one baby.

Twins.

I never told Marco.

I thought he had chosen Sophia.

I thought the life we built meant nothing to him.

But Vincent’s file showed something completely different.

There were photographs.

Bank transfers.

Phone records.

And one recording.

Marco’s voice.

“Where is Elena?”

Sophia answered:

“She left.”

“Why?”

“She saw us.”

“You’re lying.”

“I am not.”

“You had no right to do this.”

Sophia laughed.

“You’re the one who married her.”

Marco’s voice became furious.

“I love Elena.”

I covered my mouth.

I had never heard those words.

Not after that night.

Not during the divorce proceedings.

Not during the months I spent hiding.

Vincent looked at me.

“He spent three years trying to find you.”

“Why didn’t he?”

“Because Sophia made sure he couldn’t.”

PART 5 — What Sophia Had Done

Sophia had manipulated everything.

She forged messages that made Marco believe I wanted nothing to do with him.

She sent emails from fake accounts.

She told him I had left the country.

She even hired people to make it appear that I had started a new life in Europe.

But there was something even worse.

She had been stealing from Marco.

Millions of dollars.

Using shell companies.

Using his name.

Using the Bellini family’s reputation.

Marco eventually discovered the fraud.

And when he began investigating, Sophia panicked.

That’s when she decided she needed me gone permanently.

Vincent showed me one final document.

A medical report.

My sister had arranged for someone to follow me the night I left Chicago.

She knew I was pregnant.

She had known before I did.

I stared at the page.

“She knew about the twins?”

Vincent nodded.

“She knew before Marco did.”

My hands shook.

“Why would she care?”

“Because she believed if Marco ever learned about the children, he’d leave her forever.”

I looked toward the upstairs bedroom.

My children were sleeping.

Three years of their lives.

Three years Marco had never seen.

I suddenly realized something.

Sophia hadn’t been protecting herself from Marco.

She had been protecting herself from the children.
