Eat This Daily to Help Lower Cholesterol: What the Science Says

  • by

Social media often claims that eating a bowl of oatmeal with a special topping every day can clear clogged arteries and dramatically lower cholesterol in just one month. While no single food can “clean out” your arteries, oats are one of the best-studied foods for supporting healthy cholesterol levels.

The key ingredient is soluble fiber, especially beta-glucan, which has been shown to help lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol when eaten regularly as part of a heart-healthy diet.

Why Oats Are Good for Your Heart

Oats contain beta-glucan, a type of soluble fiber that:

  • Helps reduce LDL (“bad”) cholesterol.
  • Supports healthy digestion.
  • Helps you feel full longer.
  • May improve blood sugar control when eaten as part of a balanced meal.

Research suggests that consuming about 3 grams of beta-glucan daily—roughly the amount found in 1½ cups (about 80 g) of dry rolled oats—can help lower LDL cholesterol.
