1. Caramelize the onions
Finely chop about 2 large yellow onions. Heat 1–2 tablespoons of butter or olive oil in a skillet over medium-low heat.
Cook the onions slowly for 25–35 minutes, stirring occasionally, until deeply golden and caramelized. Allow them to cool completely.
2. Combine the ingredients
Add the sour cream, dry onion soup mix, and cooled caramelized onions to a bowl.
3. Mix
Stir everything together until evenly combined and creamy.
4. Chill
Cover and refrigerate for at least 1 hour. This gives the onion flavor time to develop.
5. Serve
Give the dip a quick stir before serving. Place it in a serving bowl and surround it with potato chips, crackers, celery, carrots, or toasted bread.
