Step 1: Prepare the bread
Lay the slices of bread on a clean work surface.
Spread a thin, even layer of softened butter over one side of each slice of bread. Make sure you cover the edges as well, since the butter helps create that beautiful golden, crispy crust.
Step 2: Add the cheese
Place a slice or two of cheese on the unbuttered side of four slices of bread.
For an extra-gooey sandwich, you can combine different cheeses, such as cheddar and mozzarella.
Top each sandwich with another slice of bread, making sure the buttered sides are facing outward.
Step 3: Preheat the air fryer
Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 2–3 minutes.
If your air fryer doesn’t require preheating, you can place the sandwiches directly inside.
Step 4: Arrange the sandwiches
Place the sandwiches in the air fryer basket in a single layer.
Don’t overcrowd the basket. Leave a little space around each sandwich so the hot air can circulate properly.
If the air fryer fan tends to move lightweight bread, place a small heat-safe rack or accessory over the sandwiches if appropriate for your appliance.
Step 5: Air fry
Cook at 375°F (190°C) for about 4–5 minutes.
Carefully open the basket and flip each sandwich.
Continue cooking for another 3–4 minutes, or until both sides are golden brown and the cheese is completely melted.
Cooking times can vary depending on the air fryer and the thickness of the bread.
Step 6: Let them rest
Carefully remove the grilled cheese sandwiches from the air fryer and let them rest for 1–2 minutes.
The cheese will be extremely hot immediately after cooking, so allow it to cool slightly before taking the first bite.
Step 7: Serve
Cut each sandwich in half and serve while warm and gooey.
These sandwiches are delicious on their own or alongside tomato soup, vegetable soup, pickles, or a fresh salad.
Tips for the Best Air Fryer Grilled Cheese
Use bread that is sturdy enough to hold the melted cheese without becoming soggy. Soft sandwich bread works well, while sourdough or thick-cut bread gives an especially crispy result.
For the best cheese pull, use freshly shredded cheese or a combination of cheeses that melt well. Cheddar, mozzarella, Monterey Jack, and provolone are all excellent choices.
Keep an eye on the sandwiches during the final few minutes because the bread can go from golden brown to overly dark quickly.
Just 3 ingredients, a few minutes in the air fryer, and you have a crispy, buttery grilled cheese with a perfectly melted center!
