The promise sounds tempting: “Put two drops in your ear and your hearing will come back.” But there is no simple household liquid proven to restore hearing or permanently silence tinnitus within minutes.
Tinnitus is the perception of ringing, buzzing, hissing, or other sounds when there is no external source. It can happen for many reasons, including exposure to loud noise, earwax buildup, age-related hearing changes, certain medications, ear infections, and other conditions.
Could Ear Drops Help?
Sometimes—but it depends on the cause.
If excessive earwax is blocking the ear canal, appropriate earwax-softening drops may help soften the wax so it can be removed. This can improve hearing when the hearing problem is actually caused by the blockage.

- Severe dizziness or balance problems

What Can Actually Help Tinnitus?
The most useful first step is determining why the tinnitus is happening. A doctor or hearing professional can examine the ear for wax, infection, inflammation, or other problems and may recommend a hearing test.
For persistent tinnitus, management can include treating an underlying ear problem, protecting hearing from excessive noise, addressing hearing loss when present, using sound enrichment, and treatments such as cognitive behavioral therapy when tinnitus is significantly affecting quality of life.
Pay Attention to Sudden Hearing Loss
If hearing suddenly becomes reduced in one ear—particularly if it happens over hours or a few days—don’t wait for an internet remedy to work. Sudden hearing loss can require urgent medical assessment, because some causes are time-sensitive.
So while the “two drops” trick makes an attractive social-media headline, there is no reliable drop that can make everyone “hear like before.” The right treatment depends on what is causing the hearing problem in the first place.
