6 Foods to Limit If You Have Neuropathy

  • by

Neuropathy can cause burning, tingling, numbness, sensitivity, or shooting pain, especially in the hands and feet. While no single food automatically causes neuropathy pain in everyone, certain foods can make underlying problems—particularly poor blood-sugar control, inflammation, or cardiovascular risk—more difficult to manage.

If you experience nerve pain, paying attention to your diet can be an important part of an overall health plan. Here are six foods and drinks worth limiting.

1. Sugary Drinks

Soda, sweetened juices, energy drinks, and heavily sweetened coffees can deliver a large amount of added sugar very quickly.

Frequent blood-glucose spikes can be particularly problematic for people with diabetes-related neuropathy. Choose water, unsweetened tea, or sparkling water instead.

2. Candy and Other High-Sugar Sweets

Cookies, cakes, pastries, candy, and other highly sugary foods are easy to overeat and can contribute to poor blood-sugar control.

You don’t necessarily have to eliminate every treat. Smaller portions and less frequent consumption can make it easier to maintain a balanced diet.

3. Refined Carbohydrates

White bread, many crackers, highly refined breakfast cereals, and other refined-grain foods can raise blood sugar relatively quickly.

Whenever possible, choose higher-fiber alternatives such as whole-grain bread, oats, beans, lentils, and vegetables.

4. Deep-Fried and Highly Processed Foods

Frequent consumption of fried foods, fast food, and heavily processed snacks can make it harder to maintain a healthy weight and cardiovascular profile.

Try replacing fried foods with baked, grilled, steamed, or roasted options.

5. Processed Meats

Bacon, sausages, hot dogs, and other processed meats can be high in sodium and saturated fat.

Instead, build meals around foods such as fish, eggs, beans, lentils, poultry, nuts, and seeds.

6. Excessive Alcohol

Alcohol can contribute to nerve damage, particularly with long-term heavy consumption. For someone who already has neuropathy, reducing alcohol or avoiding it may be an important step.

If you drink alcohol and have neuropathy, discuss your intake with your healthcare professional.

What Should You Eat Instead?

A nerve-friendly eating pattern can include plenty of vegetables, fruits in appropriate portions, whole grains, beans, lean proteins, fish, nuts, seeds, and healthy fats.

Foods containing nutrients such as vitamin B12, folate, and other B vitamins are also important because certain nutritional deficiencies can contribute to nerve problems. However, taking large doses of vitamins without testing or medical advice isn’t a good substitute for finding the underlying cause.

Most importantly, don’t assume that food is the only cause of your symptoms. Neuropathy can have many causes, including diabetes, vitamin deficiencies, certain medications, alcohol use, infections, and other medical conditions.

If you have new or worsening numbness, weakness, balance problems, or severe nerve pain, getting the underlying cause evaluated is much more important than simply eliminating foods from your diet.
