Water with lemon and baking soda is a popular homemade drink that appears frequently online. Some posts claim it can “detox” the body, balance blood pressure, improve digestion, or cure various health problems. However, these claims are often exaggerated.
Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) is a source of sodium and is also used medically for specific conditions. There is no proven general-purpose dosage of baking soda and lemon water that is appropriate for everyone. Taking too much can cause excessive sodium intake and disturbances in the body’s acid-base balance.
If you simply want a refreshing lemon drink, you can make one without baking soda.
Simple Lemon Water Recipe
Ingredients:
- 1 glass (250–300 ml) of drinking water
- ½ fresh lemon
- Ice, optional
- A small amount of honey, optional
Step 1: Prepare the Lemon
Wash the lemon thoroughly and cut it in half. Squeeze approximately half of the lemon into a clean glass.
Step 2: Add the Water
Pour in 250–300 ml of cool or lukewarm water and stir well.
Step 3: Add Ice or Honey
For a refreshing drink, add a few ice cubes. If you prefer a sweeter taste, you can add a small amount of honey.
What About Adding Baking Soda?
If you have seen recipes recommending a particular number of teaspoons of baking soda, don’t assume that amount is safe for daily use. The appropriate medical dose depends on why sodium bicarbonate is being used, as well as a person’s health and medications.
People with conditions such as high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart failure, or sodium-restricted diets should be particularly careful with additional sodium. Baking soda can also interact with some medications.
Can Lemon and Baking Soda Detox the Body?
There is no good evidence that this combination “cleanses” the blood, removes toxins, or cures disease. Your kidneys and liver already perform the body’s major waste-processing functions.
For everyday hydration, plain water or lemon water is a much simpler choice.
If you are considering baking soda because of persistent heartburn, stomach problems, kidney concerns, or another medical condition, speak with a healthcare professional rather than relying on a social-media recipe.
The safest recipe is simple: water + fresh lemon. Baking soda should be used medically only when there is a clear reason and an appropriate dose.
